Obscura, 'darkness' in Latin, makes 'a dark room' with 'camera' ('room' in Latin). Poke a small hole through, an image of the world outside would reflect on the wall in an upside-down manner. This upscale-pinhole-camera-like room is the origin of modern photography dated 3 B.C. Derived from THINK-SILLY.COM, Obscura Magazine aims to capture remarkable contemporary personalities and events, in Hong Kong and worldwide, all while establishing a unique vision through words and images to reflect "[Obscura's] interest, passion and sensitivity."
The latest issue of Obscura for the spring 2012 season shines a light on iconic fashion brand, Chanel. For this issues's cover story, the Obscura editorial team documents their visit to the Parisian art supply shops, restaurants and bookstores that are frequented by Karl Lagerfield along with Coco Chanel's residence and studio, a tour of the factory that manufactures Chanel camellia accessories and embroideries, and an in-depth interview with Chanel Studio Dierector Virginie Viard.
Obscura's popular “Machine” column continues its exploration of antique automobiles of note and, in this issue, examines the history of Japanese car culture and design by looking at three iconic Japanese sport-cars that were born in the 1970s - the Honda Civic, Nissan Skyline GTX and the first generation Toyota Celica.
The current issue also brings us an exclusive group interview with Jun Takahashi of Undercover, Takahiro Miyashita of The SoloIst and Yosuke Aizawa of White Mountaineering. Widely considered among the bastions of Japanese fashion, Obscura's interview marks the first time these three designers have jointly accepted an interview by media outside of Japan.
Finally, accompanying the current issue are instructions and materials for making a commemorative Obscura leather card holder, complete with sewing kit. The DIY cardholder features a soft leather interior to protect cards against scratches, unique side stitching details, and an embossed Obscura logo.
